Upcoming Changes
14 April 2023
Welcome all! If you’ve been hanging around my Etsy shop, you’ve probably noticed some changes. New colors. New images. New fonts.
That’s because on the first of June, we will officially change from Working Writer Biz to Working Writer Ink.
So why the pivot?
I realized that, while I love running the business side of my writing, the hyper focus I was giving it (in part because of running WWB) was stifling my actual writing. I was thinking too much about publication and royalties and market trends. I am a slow writer who prefers to write what I want, rather than rapid release marketable books. But so many of the business-focused people out there advise the latter, and I kept finding myself sucked in that direction despite myself. And building business tools was part of that.
So I’m drawing back into the real focus of my writing: craft and creativity. That means pivoting Working Writer Biz too, because it’s an extension of my writing. The tools I sell through my shop are tools I build for my own needs first.
And to be honest, I always kinda hated the word ‘Biz’
I cringed every time I wrote it. And it’s part of why it took me two years to even build the most basic form of this website. My intention was to help writers get past their fear of the word ‘business’ and a) grow their careers as authors, and b) protect their hard work and their royalties.
Don’t worry, that will still be a big part of what I do here. But I want to encompass the whole of what it means to be a working writer.
My myth-based approach to writing craft
I used to teach writing courses in the Continuing Education department at North Seattle College. At the time I was working toward my PhD in Mythological Studies with an emphasis in Depth Psychology. So I bring to you an education background in the building blocks of narrative and story. And it’s part of what’s coming down the line. I have articles on writing being edited as we speak, and I have plans for craft-oriented tools–some of which will be in my shop and some will be free.
So what in the meantime?
I finally have a newsletter! Sign up to keep up to date with new articles, tools, and updates to existing tools. There is also a reusable coupon in my Etsy shop for anyone subscribed.
Okay, by why ‘Ink?’
Because some greedy fecker is sitting on the workingwriter dot com domain with a price tag well into the thousands. I’m not an ‘Inc.’ But in my free time I do like to make my own inks. And ‘Ink’ is a key component of being a writer.
